Among top 18 higher learning institutions in ‘Tier-5’
SUBANG JAYA: Taylor ’s University College has inched another milestone - it is among 18 higher learning institutions, including public universities to attain ‘Tier -5’ or excellent status.
It attained the ranking in the Rating System for Institutions of Higher Learning (Setara) 2009, placing it on par with other top ranking public universities in the country.
TUC was among 11 private and seven public higher learning institutions to achieve the prestigious recognition.
Announcing this recently, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said TUC had earned the spot as outlined by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency.
The ‘Tier-5’ ranking was awarded to only 18 out of 58 participating universities, and TUC has earned a spot not merely as one of the 18, but also one of the top scorers on the list.
According to Mohamed Khaled, the judging for the rating system was based on 25 criteria.
He said the judging criterion recognizes talent, resources and governance, curriculum and quality of graduates.
The Setara rating would be used as an input by the Higher Education Ministry in formulating appropriate higher education policies, he said.
Institutions that earned an excellent rating would be entitled to local and foreign government sponsored students, government research grants, and also eligible for research university status.
They would also enjoy flexibility and exemptions in applying for teaching permits and seeking approvals to fix the salary of foreign lecturers, he said.
TUC Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Hassan Said said that it was an achievement for TUC to be on par with Malaysia ’s premier institutions.
“The incentives we will receive like additional sponsored students and research funding is a good move and we welcome it.”
Twenty-five universities and university colleges Đ 14 private institutions and 11 public ones Đ were rated very good (Tier-4) while four private institutions were rated good.
No university or university college earned the Tier 6 or distinction rating.
