Taylor's students show compassion for Mount Merapi victims

BANDAR SUNWAY: Taylor’s students showed compassion and sympathy in an altogether united front when news of the devastation in Indonesia hit local shores. They organised a donation and collected a sizeable amount for 700 evacuees in about 50 relief centres in Jogjakarta.

Taylor’s University Indonesian Alumni Association president Andita Frida Aisha gathered the money for the Disaster Relief Center in Jogjakarta. “We collaborated with the Malaysian Indonesian Student Council to help donate the collection to the victims who badly need them,” the Taylor’s mass communications student said in an interview.

She said that students from Taylor’s showed their sympathies and donated graciously for the victims.
“We are happy that the students from all walks of life came forward to donate whatever they could for the worthy cause,” the 19-year-old said.

“It is very worrying because we are all the way here in Malaysia and we have no way of knowing their situation over there. It is still very worrying because anything can happen anytime,” Indonesian mass communications student Cicilia Iskandar, 20, said.

Another Indonesian Communications student Puteri Winata, 20, said that although the main cities like Jakarta were not as seriously affected, the Indonesian students here were still worried about victims in their homeland.
“We can only hope for the best and do what we can within our limits,” she said.

More than 140 people died in the recent Mount Merapi eruption. It is reported that small burst of flames and lava are still spewing out every now and then that causes a slow but gradual climb in the death toll of the citizens.
