Shoppers take part in Earth Hour 2011

Non-essential lights at Sunway Pyramid were switched off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm when World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia and shoppers took a stand against climate change during Earth Hour 2011 on March 26.

Candles were lit up in demonstration that everybody’s actions in conserving energy and resources from our beloved mother earth can make a difference.

“I would like to stress that climate change is an issue which can only be solved through a collective effort,” said RedFM deejay Arnold Loh.

“I hope I remembered to turn off the lights before I left my house,” joked Loh to the crowd.

International Medical University student Siow Vei Shaun said, “Celebrating earth hour is mainly for awareness purposes.”

“Our everyday actions like recycling and avoiding the use of plastic bags is of more importance,” added Siow.

Celebrities that came to support the cause were Miss World Malaysia 2008 Soo Wincci, RedFM’s Jeremy Teo and Rudy, and former 8TV Quickie host Rina Omar.

Other highlights of the evening were short firework displays by the organisers, “Dance in the Dark” flash mob, ‘wayang kulit’ show by Tree Theatre Group and a performance by Yayasan Anak Warisan Alam (YAWA) percussionists.

The event also featured Sunway Pyramid’s newly launched Bring Your Own Bag (BYOB) Trolley Bag at WWF-Malaysia bazaar outside the mall.

Earth Hour was initiated in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a symbolic gesture to raise awareness on climate change and sustainability issues.
