Worried about the weather lately? Hurricanes, typhoons and floods seem to be reported so often that they seem so common in modern times.
It is now generally accepted that human activities and technological advances have highly contributed to global warming, which in turn causes climate change.
Various initiatives are being taken by the Malaysian government and private sectors to promote environmentally friendly green building technology to help reduce global warming. This links with the objectives of the 10th Malaysia Plan to increase the availability of Green Technology.
The new National Green Technology Policy launched in April 2009 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak provides green technology guidelines and create new opportunities for industries and corporations to create a positive economic growth.
In order to counter global warming, green technologies are coming to the forefront. These technologies consist of continuously evolving group of methods and materials.
Malaysia’s government and private sectors are taking steps to popularize green technologies. Engineer of ECO Energy Sdn Bhd and a local energy management consultant of ESCO company, Steve Anthony Lojuntin said, “First of all people need to understand the definition of Green technologies. Basically, Green Technologies are the application of the environment sciences to conserve the natural environment and resources and by catering the negative impacts of human life.”
“Recently, we are collaborating with University Sains Malaysia (USM) to create awareness by doing a demonstration for architecture and engineering students and professionals regarding Green Technologies project, water energy and building structure,” he added.
Graduate student Nornabilah Hamdan of University Malaysia Pahang, feels her university education has helped her become more aware about global warming.
“I remember when I was in university, all my roommates supported the ‘Save Our Earth’ campaigns and we turned off the lights for a few hours. I found it very interesting and at least I can contribute something to save our planet.
“As a chemical engineering student, we have been taught in our syllabus on how to operate the system, balance the ecosystem and also study about the performance of the system which is related to reduce global warming. Even though the syllabus is not directly saying that those systems are for reducing global warming, but it is actually there,” she said.
Ophthalmologist consultant at Hospital Selayang, Dr. Nor Fariza Ngah said, “The agriculture, transportation, industrialization and deforestation are the common factors that cause global warming.”
Citizens need to embrace Green Technologies, and opt for a greener, more sustainable lifestyle, while lobbying for legislation that makes good use of these technologies.
