Taylor’s University Symphony Orchestra’s (TUSO) “Russian Roulette” themed concert triggered a rousing response from concert-goers, staying true to their tagline to “Spin the music, pull the passion” on April 23.
The two hour long affair which was devoid of any unnecessary frills or visual gimmicks forced the spotlight strictly on the orchestra’s larger-than-life performance and brought the packed multi-purpose hall down leaving audiences begging (even demanding!) for more.
Kicking off the show was a stripped down acapella duet by Tracy and Nana after which the full orchestra claimed the stage by launching into a rapturous performance of Coldplay’s ‘Viva La Vida’.
The 55 member strong orchestra served up a delectable set-list paying homage to both contemporary and cult classic silver screen soundtracks throughout the night.
Songs showcased included ‘Jai Ho’ from the 2008 Academy Award winning movie Slumdog Millionaire, ‘I See You’ from James Cameron’s big screen project Avatar, the ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ score and even iconic theme song of 80s television series, Hawaii Five-O.
Aside from performances from the full orchestra, the concert also featured instrumental sections by the string ensemble, the Fresco Harmonica Quartet and the string duet.
The evening was devoted to Hollywood film music in order to move away from the drab image usually associated to orchestral performances and to portray a more modern and relatable image for the team.
“Russian Roulette was chosen as the theme of the night as we wanted to serve up a palate of songs that everyone young and old could enjoy,” Organizing Chairperson Collin She explained.
TUSO was originally incepted in early 2009 and has since grown from a symphony band of 15 members to a full-scale symphony orchestra.
