Short of bringing your own lunchboxes, cheap eats are woefully scarce on campus. With that in mind, The Inkslingers decided that if you are going to spend your hard-earned money, we would help you figure out the best lunch spots on which to do so.
Backofen, our pick for this issue, is a restaurant that prides itself on serving “simple Austrian food”. Many famous Austrian dishes are on offer, including the ever-popular wiener schnitzel. Imagine our delight when we saw sauerkraut on the menu alongside veal sausage!
Yummy aglio olio
There are other non-traditional dishes on their menu as well, including sandwiches, pasta and a variety of side dishes. Our classmates raved over their aglio olio, which is not too oily and just nicely spiced. Try their delicious roast potatoes loaded with garlic and herbs - just remember not to get too close to anyone afterwards!
If you have a break in the mornings, their breakfast menu is hearty and worth every penny. We recommend the mushroom and cheese omelette - the gooey cheese in the middle leaks out the sides and crisps up wonderfully with the eggs, yum!
As for desserts, their selection is the best we have found on campus. Chocolate éclairs, apple strudels and cheese cakes are just a few of the tastefully sinful sweets they have everyday in their display case. The lemon pie is a good place to start, with a crumbly shell and smooth tangy filling.
While not completely authentic, the high quality of the ingredients and the friendliness of the staff make this the perfect place for us to take a break in between those gruelling lectures. We have been back here many times over and now bid you to do the same.
