Commfest, a huge success

CommFest 2010, one of the biggest events by the School of Communication (SOC) this year, had an unexpected turnout of more than 1,500 people, making it a huge success.

“The turn-out was unbelievable. It’s more than the anticipated number of attendees,” said Francisca Lim, one of the event organisers.

Held on Oct 29 at Taylor’s Lakeside Amphitheatre, the event kick-started with a speech by Professor Datuk Dr Hassan Said, Vice Chancellor of Taylor’s University followed by an incredible stage performance, and the Amazing Race flag-off by Deputy Vice Chancellor Pradeep Nair. A combined effort between proPassion Communications (Semester six, Diploma in Communication students) and LIFE (Semester four, Diploma in Communication students), CommFest was created as a platform for students to express themselves through media, arts, and sports.

Josephine Tan, the Dean of SOC said that the CommFest was a fantastic opportunity for students to express their creative and youthful energy.
“This event allows them to showcase their talents as well as prepare them for the real life challenges of the job market as they are undertaking the entire venture themselves,” she said.

Throughout the event, Bus Company and many other talented bands performed on stage and kept the event rocking with music. The Amazing Race saw excited team members clad in orange t-shirts, running from station to station, looking for clues to claim first place at the finish line. Fear Factor featured a series of gruelling challenges with the teams of three enduring their first task of bobbing for sweets in a bowl full of sambal (hot chili paste) and black pepper.

For the Dodgeball Tournament held at the basketball court, teams of 10 stepped up to face their opponents and avoid getting hit by the balls thrown at them. The fun inflatable games were G-Force; rolling about in huge zorbing balls and down a flight of stairs, Gladiator; whacking your opponent off the beam, 4-in-1 Rodeo: riding atop a tenacious-looking mechanic ‘bull’ and Sticky Fly Wall (Spiderman): jumping and sticking to a Velcro wall, and Demolition.

Outside the Student Life Centre, the corridor was lined with rows of food, drinks, blogshop, manicure and other booths.“The event was pretty awesome. But the highlight was the dance competition,” a student from Foundation in Computing student, Yix Xun said.

The 10 finalists from the FEELosophy dance audition battled it out for the cash prize of RM1800 and other prizes.
