Justin Bieber may have star-struck the girls, Maroon 5 drew in the crowd, but Switchfoot definitely brought the love to the 1000 odd energetic fans that attended the concert at a small hall in Kompleks Dewan Mutiara at Kuala Lumpur on Labour Day.
Returning since their last visit in 2008, the San Diego based band that is famous for songs such as Dare You to Move and Meant To Live, certainly wooed the crowd and unfortunately for one girl, off her feet as she fainted half way through the concert.
Opening for them were local fusion rock band Bus Company, winners of Battle of the Bands Asia 2007. However the lack of management in the ticketing entry department meant that nearly half the crowd was still lining up outside the over populated hall area.
All was soon forgotten the moment the front man, Jon Foremen stepped up on stage and said ‘Apa Khabar’ to a roaring approval of the crowd. He also added, ‘Saya Cinta Padamu’ later on, which absolutely drove the noise levels up by a couple of notches.
The band opened with an unfamiliar but heavy rock tune of The Sound, which was a tribute to humanitarian and civil rights activist John M. Perkins, from their latest album Hello Hurricane. The band transitioned seamlessly into Stars that got the crowd singing along.
After performing the thought provoking song Free, a long hyped up musical instrumental was played by the band that highlighted the slick guitar rifts of lead guitarist Drew Shirley. The band then mellowed the atmosphere by performing the love song Always that had the crowd waving their hands.
After the song Awakening, they went full force with We Were Meant To Live and Mess Of Me with many in the crowd shouting along.
They performed a medley of Learning to Breath [which was played semi unplugged] and Home, a track from their very first album, Legend of Chin (1997).
The band then sang Needle And Haystack Life before leaving the stage and returning moments later to sing Hello Hurricane. They went backstage once more before re-emerging for their encore song.
An unplugged version of Only Hope was played and had the crowd singing every single word. The band then broke out into their much anticipated Dare You To Move.
The band retreated backstage as the satisfied concert-goers began to leave the hall. But to their surprise the band came out again and started in playing full force as they did a medley of We Are One Tonight and The Shadow Proves The Sunshine.
Everybody went back fully satisfied and energised, with their heads nodding back and forth to the tunes that filled the night.
