Movie review: Paul

The comedy duo of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) is reunited once again in Greg Mottola’s (Superbad, Adventureland) sci-fi comedy about an alien named Paul.

Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) -whose capture by the government some forty years ago after crash landing on earth has since been contributing to the current pop culture portrayed in movies (at one point even talking to Spielberg on the phone) and books on aliens and anything alike- decides to escape one day from the government’s secret facility with the help of an inside agent.

Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Frost), both Sci-fi geeks, are visiting Comic-Con from England. They run into Paul during their journey through the highways in the States.

Leaving a trail of fainting people every time Paul reveals himself, they are then joined by one-eyed trailer-park gal Ruth (Kristen Wiig), who dismisses Darwin’s theory of evolution. Her faith in a Higher Power is now challenged by her encounter with Paul. After revealing the secrets of the universe to her, she is enlightened and attempts profanity.

Hot on the gang’s tail is ruthless and secretive Agent Zoil (Jason Bateman) who wants to catch Paul but is hesitant in accepting the help of two rookie agents who desire to take Bateman’s position as top cop.
The computer-generated imagery (CGI) of the alien in this film is very well depicted, and Rogen is a virtuoso at mixing motor-mouthed rudeness with a hint of tenderness and human compassion.

This slapstick movie is predictable and only manages to offer the audience a good laugh once in a while. The storyline of the show is ordinary although a few surprises are thrown in.

In my opinion, this movie is not suitable for children since it contains vulgarity. But if you are one of those who simply adore the combination of Pegg and Frost, then this movie might just be worth checking out.
