Everyone is clueless the first time around. Get clued in fast to get the best out of your years in university.
Some nuggets of wisdom to help you freshies:
“It never is easy to try out new things in life. Challenge yourself every day and manage your time properly. In class, speak up and be participative, seek answers above and beyond what is required in this programme.”
- Tan Ee Xion, First Year Experience Coordinator
“I feel that it is important for first-year students to realise that a whole new set of responsibilities awaits them: to gain as much knowledge as possible, to be independent and, most importantly, to immerse themselves fully into the rhythm of university life and enjoy every second of their time here.”
- Ngim Mei Yee, Lecturer in charge of the First Year Experience program
Final year students have some things to share with hindsight:
“Remember what you learn in school, it can really help you when you’re out in the working world.”
- Colin Gan, Communication student
“Don’t leave your assignments unfinished until the last minute!”
- Leroy Mah, Communication student
“Open up your mind to new experiences and be happy. You’ve got to be happy to learn!”
- Billy Chua, Degree in Architecture
University is definitely a new experience for first year students and it would go by in a whisk. Before you know it, semesters would pass you by and you would wish you did something enriching during the time you were here.
So, just absorb and learn all you can. Work hard and play hard.
Hope this will not be a case of pearls cast before swine!
