The winning team and Student Event Advisor Suresh Singh posing with their MMU Open IX trophy
An inspiring performance saw Taylor’s tennis team retained the Inter-Varsity championship title at MMU Open IX held from April 1 to April 3 at Multimedia University (MMU) in Malacca.
The team of five was declared inter-varsity champions as they were the university team that reached furthest (semi-finals) in the competition.
They beat teams from three other universities – MMU, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur – to match last year’s feat.
Taylor’s also won third place at the open tournament that saw 12 teams from all over the country, including teams representing clubs and companies, battling in a fierce competition.
“This is our second championship title, because we won last year. We hope to win again next year to keep the cup at Taylor’s,” said team captain and president of Taylor’s tennis club Muhammad Hyqal.
The team topped their group after winning both their games in the preliminary round before beating team Universiti Kuala Lumpur in the quarter-final to reach the semis.
They succumbed to a defeat at the hands of a strong CIMB team in the semi-final before beating local side Net Nuts to grab 3rd place winning RM 600 in cash price.
“I am very proud of the team, for winning the title second year running proving that we were the best university team that had competed,’ said Student Event Advisor Suresh Singh who accompanied the team in their feat.
“Their win had further promoted the sport in the college. Also, other universities have seen what we can do, now they will see us as a great threat’ added Suresh, elated by the triumph.
