World Health Day 2011: Antimicrobial Resistance: No action today, no cure tomorrow

With an antibiotic for every disease, there is a fear that everyone will become resistant towards anti microbial medicine one day.

World Health Organization (WHO) named this fear, antimicrobial resistance, in conjunction with World Health Day on April 7.

Prolonged usage of antimicrobial medicine leads to development of resistance, which makes these medicines ineffective towards their targeted infections.

Experts say that microorganisms that develop resistance towards the antibiotics are huge concerns as resistant infections may kill, spread to others and cause severe damage to society.

WHO recognises the dangers of microbial resistance and called for global commitment to preserve these medicines for future generations.

According to WHO, inferior quality medicine, incorrect prescriptions and poor infection control boost the spread of drug resistance. WHO believes that governments should be more committed to fight these issues.

This year, WHO introduced a six-point package on World Health Day to help countries fight this growing menace.

World Health Day is celebrated to mark the foundation of WHO and highlights a key health issue each year.
